Not gonna lie this movie wasnt that bad tbh. Free Zombi child. Damn french fries. What follows is a deliciously unsettling movie that manages to encompass the pains of teenage romance with a tale of the 'undead' as a metaphor for colonialism and it actually works. I can't think of too many examples in recent cinema where two opposing themes have been as beautifully united as they are here. In some ways it's closer to something like "The Neon Demon" or the recent remake of "Suspiria" than it is to Val Lewton. Here is a film with a creeping sense of dread, we've all seen films in which schoolgirls are not as sweet as they appear to be) and the grand guignol finale is as spooky as a good horror movie should be. It also confirms director Bertrand Bonello as one of the most exciting talents working anywhere today.

Often these shuffling souls were returned to our world to work manual labor in the fields without complaining, stretching the tendrils of capitalism and colonialism into the spirit realm. Cerebral and slippery, the French writer-director Bertrand Bonello's new film Zombi Child isn't really a horror movie. Bonello wants his undead to provoke (mild) discomfort and (major) self-reflection, rather than shock or terror. So he uses pop culture's favorite brain-dead punching bags as an excuse to beef up our own noggins, in ways that will strike some viewers as too subtle and others as far too obvious. Given that Vodou (Voodoo) and zombies are the only things most white people already know about Haitian culture, a director from the nation that once colonized Haiti needs to do a lot of legwork if he wants to employ these elements in an anti-colonialist fable. Our story begins in 1962 Haiti. A young man (Mackenson Bijou) is buried in a cemetery, but he's later resurrected and sent to the sugarcane fields in a long line of shuffling, empty-headed guys, with no memory of the family who once wept over his grave. In the script the character is named "Clarvius Narcisse. a real-life Haitian man who was supposedly "zombified" for years. The opening scene shows a poison being prepared from the oils of a fish, one possible explanation scholars have offered for Narcisse's condition. Bonello cuts between Clarvius and his imagined granddaughter, Mélissa (knockout discovery Wislanda Louimat. She attends an all-girls boarding school in France in the present day, where bored students wander palatial hallways in-between humanities lectures and perform choreographed greetings in spotless red sashes. Mélissa is an anomaly at the school, both racially and behaviorally, and seems to float through class in a semi-conscious daze. She's quiet, and so is the film; it's slow, often languidly paced, and unconcerned with building any sort of tension or dread. Its longest stretch of dialogue comes when one of her teachers delivers a thorough lecture on France's tainted legacy of expansionism. That lecture scene is as clear a sign as any of where Bonello wants to take his ideas. Zombi Child is opening a path between the Caribbean nation and the colonizer it overthrew, a path that's powered by a mixture of guilt and fear, just as the magical elements of the story open up a liminal space between the living and the dead. Mélissa is carrying considerable trauma on her shoulders: Not only was her grandfather an enslaved walking dead, but she also lost both of her parents in the 2010 Haiti earthquake. All of this only serves to make her more fascinating to white classmate Fanny (Louise Labeque) who develops a strange obsession with her. Fanny is rooted in sheltered teen concerns, what the Internet likes to derisively call "first-world problems" exams, a tight-knit sorority, a boyfriend who's somewhere far away and may or may not be imaginary. When she hears about the awesome power of Vodou, her thoughts turn to: How could this help me? It's true the film needs Fanny to be a bore in contrast to Mélissa in order to carry its themes to the end, when the white girl's selfishness and cultural ignorance lead her to mess with forces she doesn't understand. Yet even with this awareness, having to watch a wooden plank idealize her exotic best friend for an entire film feels, frankly, a bit tiresome. We've seen this movie before. But Bonello, who burned up the festival scene in 2016 with the student-radicals thriller Nocturama, is far more concerned with mood than story anyway. The Haiti segments are spliced together with a delicate rhythm, in long, quiet stretches that allow us to find a sense of place and feeling: the gentle moon overhead, the lush fields that hide terrible exploitation. A poem Mélissa delivers to her wowed friends (with the refrain "Listen, white world" carries an undercurrent of rage. And then the style shifts rapidly in the film's Vodou-inflected climax, when the tectonic plates of the dead shift and the legendary underworld trickster Baron Samedi (Néhémy Pierre-Dahomey) rears his mischievous head. Clad in a top hat and white face paint, dancing with a devilish grin, the Baron is here to punish someone. But who? All this reanimation, zombie and otherwise, is rough on the soul, and the film is likely biting off more brains than it can chew. Yet by turning to Narcisse's story for inspiration, and by making the legacy of his "zombie years" multigenerational, Bonello has found deeper cultural significance in something that's until now mostly been framed as a weirdo dark-web curiosity. Haiti's rich history of revolution and rebirth is still in want of filmmakers willing to take it seriously. But at least this one returns the undead to their roots, before they themselves were colonized.

It is obvious from the title and the setting that we are meant to think of a much earlier film with a similar setting but that would appear to be where the comparisons with Jacques Tourneur's "I Walked with a Zombie" ends for in the next scene we are in comtemporary France and a group of schoolgirls are being taught French history in a very white classroom. La caméra descend dans la fosse et reçoit la dernière pelletée de terre. Peu après, on voit un corps qui marche recouvert d'un drap traîné dans la nuit. Il est conduit vers d'autres corps aux mouvements saccadés qui forment un petit groupe de zombis travaillant comme esclaves dans une plantation de canne à sucre. Puis, nous sommes transportés de nos jours pendant un cours d'histoire donné au pensionnat de jeunes filles de la Légion d'honneur, fondé par Napoléon 1er. Les élèves y apprennent que l'Empereur acheva la Révolution aux deux sens du terme et que le XIXe siècle fit l'expérience sporadique de la liberté plutôt qu'il ne déploya automatiquement les grands principes de 1789. Une institution prestigieuse Destinée aux descendantes de décoré(e)s, la Maison d'éducation de la Légion d'honneur est une institution non mixte réservée aux filles. La vie dans la Légion est parfaitement réglée, depuis le lever à 6h45 dans des dortoirs de 90 lits à l'extinction des feux à 22h, en passant par le dîner à 18h30 dans l'immense réfectoire et le temps libre entre 19h et 20h. L'uniforme élimine les barrières sociales et l'entre-soi féminin aide les filles à se construire plus librement, avec des contraintes acceptées et la sororité comme principe. Cette discipline consentie en espace clos est habilement présentée dans le film comme une force de protection relative contre le monde extérieur et une force de cohésion quand Mélissa la Haïtienne est intégrée sans heurt au groupe de copines. Mais le montage qui passe sans transition d'une vue aérienne de la Maison à celle d'un cimetière haïtien suggère aussi de bien étranges glissements ou rapprochements et la musique de film d'horreur seventies offre une solution de continuité entre deux réalités apparemment très distantes. Napoléon et l'esclavage En rétablissant l'esclavage, Napoléon trahissait pour beaucoup les idéaux révolutionnaires d'égalité et ses armées n'étaient plus celles de libérateurs mais les instruments d'une volonté de conquête et de domination. Il rencontra aussi à Saint-Domingue son premier échec militaire, dû surtout en vérité à la fièvre jaune qui décima ses soldats, mais la question coloniale mal traitée annonçait déjà la chute de l'Empire pour les historiens anticolonialistes qui présentent aujourd'hui Napoléon comme un despote sanguinaire. L'ex-colonie proclamait son indépendance. Hélas, Haïti allait devenir un pays en proie aux dictatures militaires, aux coups d'états permanents et aux ingérences étrangères notamment américaines. La période Duvalier père et fils, qui fût celle d'un pillage économique du pays, explique la présence de Mélissa à la Légion; sa mère a été décorée pour avoir enquêté sur les crimes de Baby Doc. Dans The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988) de Wes Craven, les tontons macoutes au service du pouvoir utilisent la puissance ténébreuse du vaudou pour terroriser et asservir les opposants. Zombi Child présente une variation sur ce thème. Le vaudou et la zombification La révolution haïtienne commença, parait-il, lors d'une cérémonie vaudou mais les descendants des esclaves à culture rurale et vaudou n'ont jamais obtenu le pouvoir. Maintenus dans la misère par des régimes corrompus, ils ont été exploités par les élites noires qui ont rétabli une forme d'esclavage dans les plantations. Les colons blancs ont été supplantés par des noirs accusés de « zombifier » leurs frères. Parfois au sens littéral puisque, dans le film, l'esclave qui s'échappe de la plantation a été zombifié sur les consignes de son propre frère. Il s'agit donc d'une affaire familiale. La drogue ou la « poudre de zombi » enlève toute mémoire au prétendu ressuscité qui avait été plongé dans un état de catalepsie. Retrouvant l'usage mécanique de ses membres, il n'est plus qu'un pantin articulé jusqu'à ce qu'il absorbe de la viande ou du sel. C'est ce qui arrive au grand-père de Mélissa; on le voit ensuite fuir, retrouver sa propre tombe et errer dans l'île pendant des années. Le film décrit les pratiques vaudou qui incluent le processus de zombification mais pas seulement. La femme mambo à laquelle Fanny rend visite n'est pas une sorcière exerçant la magie noire; c'est une prêtresse capable d'invoquer les esprits. Le risque est que si l'esprit est celui d'un démon indésirable, la mambo ne pourra pas exorciser. Fanny est plus fragile que Melissa qui invoque avec succès l'esprit de son grand-père. Les deux amies sont chacune possédées mais le secret de Mélissa est libérateur tandis que les rites d'incorporation auxquels Fanny s'expose peuvent être dangereux. Le politiquement correct Le réalisateur Bertrand Bonello évite les lourdeurs du film à thèse et c'est davantage les images, le montage et la subtilité du scénario qui constituent le sous-texte politique audible dans la France contemporaine. La jolie Fanny (Louise Labeque) est une adolescente blanche abandonnée par son petit ami idéalisé (elle le voit uniquement en rêve. Elle veut mourir et elle s'initie au vaudou pour surmonter son chagrin mais peut-être aussi pour se venger. Voilà une « expérience de la liberté » sur le plan strictement individuel. Le pensionnat est perçu tantôt comme un incubateur tantôt comme un mausolée. Les jeunes filles peuvent revenir à la vie après la mort apparente qui fut une forme d'initiation ou ne pas réussir à se libérer et, alors, elles reproduiront les comportements esclavagistes qui furent d'abord ceux du monde blanc, ensuite de leurs imitateurs nègres. Dans les plantations d'Haïti, ce sont des noirs qui exploitent d'autres noirs. Et si Duvalier est mort, les descendants des tontons macoutes continuent leurs méfaits dans un pays ravagé par le grand tremblement de terre de 2010. Les petites Françaises de la Légion apprennent leurs leçons d'histoire sur Napoléon. Mais écoutent-elles suffisamment les « rugissements de zombies » de la communauté noire? Voilà la question très politiquement correcte attendant une réponse adaptée aux exigences de la République néo-française multiculturelle qui se prépare à la discrimination positive dans les grandes écoles. L'exception de la Légion serait-elle une survivance de la blanche Europe où les zombis, quelque soit leur couleur, sont de plus en plus nombreux? « Les zombies, c'est nous » déclare Jim Jarmusch à propos de The Dead Don't Die.
